Elopement at Malcesine, Lake Garda

If you’re dreaming of an intimate Italian wedding that blends historic romance with dramatic natural landscapes, an elopement in Malcesine on Lake Garda is tough to beat. From exchanging vows high above the water on the terrace of Castello Scaligero to catching the late-afternoon light on the lake, every moment of this day was pure magic.

Chanell & Johnny have lived here in northern Italy for the past few years, but are moving back to the US and wanted elopement photos in their favorite place to commemorate their time here. Here is the full story of this stunning Lake Garda elopement, plus inspiration for planning your own intimate Italian wedding.

The Historic Downtown of Malcesine

When planning your elopement at Lake Garda, it’s important to understand the lighting of the area since it can be tricky with the mountains. In early October the sun sets at 6:50 PM, but the sun dips behind the mountains at 5 PM so we decided to start at 3:30 PM wandering the historic downtown area of Malcesine.

Aperitivo Hour

I wanted to capture the quintessential Italian experience for Chanell & Johnny, so after wandering the stone alleyways we headed to an osteria to grab an aperol spritz. Aperitivo, which is essentially “appetizers,” is usually in the late afternoon so it was a perfect addition for our session.

Inside Castello Scaligero

At around 4 PM we headed up to Castello Scaligero di Malcesine, a short uphill walk from the historic downtown. I usually recommend bringing a change of shoes so you’re not walking uphill on cobblestone in heels! To enter the castle it’s €7, and it closes at 6:30 PM. Fun fact, the first traces of Castello Scaligero goes back to the 6th century AD when it was destroyed then rebuilt shortly after. The views from the castle are incredible, and you can even book it for a wedding!

Sunset at the Malcesine Waterfront

As I mentioned earlier, since the sun disappears behind the mountain about two hours before the actual sunset we headed to the waterfront of Malcesine with Castello Scaligero in the background at about 4:30 PM. Since it was a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon, the beach was packed with people but we worked around it!

Cable Car to Monte Baldo

Taking the cable car from Malcesine up to Monte Baldo after the sun disappears behind the mountains is perfect since you’re so high up that you get to enjoy the views until true sunset! We walked over to the cable car at about 5 PM and it’s €30 for a roundtrip ticket; the last ascent up is at 6 PM and the last descent is at 6:45 PM so we got there just in time.

Planning Your Lake Garda Elopement

Eloping in Malcesine offers a rare combination of historic Italian charm, breathtaking alpine-meets-Mediterranean landscapes, and an intimate atmosphere that lets you focus entirely on each other. Whether you dream of exchanging vows high above the water at Castello Scaligero, catching golden hour light from a private wooden boat, or wandering through quiet, cobblestone alleys with gelato in hand, Lake Garda provides an unforgettable canvas for your story.
