Best Photo Spots in the Dolomites with Map
The Dolomites, located in northern Italy, are a stunning mountain range known for their dramatic, jagged peaks and vibrant hues during sunrise and sunset. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers breathtaking landscapes, with countless hiking and climbing opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. The rich history and charming alpine villages in the region make the Dolomites a popular destination for travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation in a picturesque setting. Whether skiing in the winter or exploring the lush greenery in the summer, the Dolomites never fail to captivate visitors with their natural beauty.
After living in Italy for two years, I’ve compiled the best photography spots in the Dolomites with a map and exact locations. The mountains create an incredible backdrop for photos, whether it’s for an elopement, engagement, or content creation, and I hope this serves as a guide to picking the best spot for your dream day!
Lago di Braies
Lago di Braies, otherwise knowns as Pragser Wildsee, is one of the most beautiful and iconic turquoise lakes in the Dolomites. Since it gets so crowded during the summer through the fall, I recommend planning your photoshoot around sunrise. By 9 AM Lago di Braies will be packed! Unfortunately the dock is no longer open to the public, but if you book a session with me I can make a reservation to rent the dock and one of the wooden boats! The upside to the dock being closed to the general public is that we don’t have to fight for space to get your shots!
Tre Cime di Lavaredo
The Tre Cime area is known for its jagged backdrop if you’re looking for a dramatic mountain photoshoot. From the parking lot there’s a small trail opposite the Tre Cime di Lavaredo trailhead, where I would take you to this spot, Cadini di Misurina. It’s an easy thirty minute hike, but it’s the perfect natural altar for an elopement. It’s also a great place for drone shots, so if you’re interested in aerial footage of your session I would be happy to capture it for you!
Seceda
Seceda is also a great area for a dramatic mountain photoshoot. There’s a gondola that can take you up and down, so there’s no need to hike since all the best views are in the area. Personally early morning when the gondola first opens would be the most ideal for lighting. The gondola closes at 6:30 PM so evenings aren’t the best during the summer since it stays light until almost 10 PM and the sun is still harsh when the gondola closes.
Alpe di Suisi
Alpe di Suisi is a stunning meadow with the typical wooden homes sprinkled across the rolling hills and a beautiful mountain backdrop. It’s a thirty minute walk to this location from the designated parking lot, even though you’re walking on paved streets. I do recommend bringing a bike or a scooter to make it a little bit quicker. The only way you can drive in is if you have a hotel reservation in the area, otherwise you will be stopped and fined by the police (they’re serious about it!). The best time to visit is at sunrise before the crowds and for the best lighting. As your photographer I would send you the pin of the parking lot and we would walk (or ride bikes) together to the location!
