Engagement in Alpe di Siusi, Dolomites
Romance at 2000 Meters: A Dreamy Alpe di Siusi Engagement Session
There is a distinct kind of magic that happens when you step foot onto Europe’s largest high-altitude alpine meadow. Rolling green fields that stretch out endlessly, dramatic limestone peaks piercing the sky, and an absolute stillness in the air make Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm) one of the most breathtaking locations in the Italian Dolomites. For couples looking for a jaw-dropping backdrop that feels both wildly cinematic and intimately peaceful, an engagement session here is hard to beat.
Mikhail and Nairah traveled from Canada for a sunrise engagement session at Alpe di Siusi in early September. Mikhail had reached out to me that he was going to be proposing to Nairah the day before the session, and wanted to surprise her with engagement photos to celebrate. I was honored to be able to capture such a special moment in their lives!
From the golden morning light spilling over the Sassolungo (Langkofel) to the quiet, winding pathways of the South Tyrol region, this session captured everything that makes alpine love stories so unforgettable. Whether you are dreaming of a destination elopement or planning a romantic couple’s getaway in Ortisei or Castelrotto, Alpe di Siusi offers a timeless canvas for your story.
Why Choose Alpe di Siusi for Your Engagement or Couple Session?
If you are weighing different backdrops for your engagement photos, few places on Earth match the sheer scale and romance of Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm). Nestled in the heart of the Italian Dolomites, this high-altitude alpine plateau offers a rare combination of sweeping vistas and intimate details that make it a dream location for couples and photographers alike.
Here is why Alpe di Siusi stands out as one of the premier locations in Europe for a couple's session:
Breathtaking Scale and Diversity: As the largest high-altitude alpine meadow in Europe, the landscape changes dramatically depending on where you look. You get the soft, rolling green hills of the plateau juxtaposed against the razor-sharp, jagged limestone faces of iconic peaks like the Sassolungo (Langkofel) and the Schlern (Sciliar).
Stunning Seasonal Character: The mood of the plateau transforms beautifully throughout the year. Spring and early summer bring vibrant wildflower blooms and lush green pastures, while autumn paints the rolling hills in rich, golden larch tones that offer incredible warmth and texture for your photos.
Cinematic Lighting: Because of its open, elevated layout, Alpe di Siusi receives incredible natural light. Whether you catch the misty, ethereal stillness of early morning sunrise or the dramatic, warm glow of golden hour as the sun dips behind the peaks, the light here naturally flatters and elevates your imagery.
A Peaceful, Immersive Experience: Away from the heavy hustle of urban locations, the deep quiet of the mountains allows you to truly slow down and focus on each other. Walking hand-in-hand along the winding alpine trails creates organic, unposed moments that capture genuine connection rather than stiff posing.
Proximity to Charming Alpine Hubs: Perfectly situated near picturesque villages like Ortisei (Urtijëi) and Castelrotto (Kastelruth), it is easily accessible while feeling completely worlds away, making it an ideal anchor for a romantic travel itinerary in South Tyrol.
The Story of the Session
What to Expect: A Step-by-Step Guide for Future Clients
Timing & Logistics
Sunrise is my favorite time of day to photograph this location, however the logistics can be a little tricky. We can no longer drive to this viewpoint, so the only way is to hike or bike from Compaccio (about 3.5 km, which is about a 45 minute easy hike or a 15 minute bike ride), or stay at the Icaro Hotel — right next to the viewpoint.
The other option is to take the cable car / ski lift in the late afternoon, but it does depend on the lighting.
A note on weather, August to early September usually brings afternoon thunderstorms, but sunrises are usually stable. Always look at the hourly forecast rather than the daily weather, otherwise it’ll just show rain!
Styling Guidance
I recommend wearing flowing fabrics that catch the mountain wind or rich color palettes that pop against green or golden meadows! White and butter yellow is beautiful when the grass is still green up until the end of September. The grass starts to change sometime in October, and by November it’s golden; once it changes, deep reds are stunning.
The Experience
Don’t worry, there won’t be any awkward posing! Just gentle prompts, moving around, and enjoying the views together while I document the genuine connection.
Dreaming of your own alpine love story? Whether you’re planning a Dolomites elopement or a romantic couples session, I’d love to tell your story!
